DAY 7 - May Challenge

I suffer from arachnophobia and am afraid of spiders...all spiders (big and small). I don’t know where the fear has come from but I am petrified whenever I see one. I go all shaky and my heart races. They always seem to seek me out as well. I can see them out of the corner of my eye. I wouldn’t go in the loft or garage back home in the UK ever because of the spiders and cobwebs. We used to get quite a lot of big house spiders back in the UK. When I lived on my own (before Rich came along), I would throw a cushion or a big book at them and wait for my dad to come round. Sometimes it would stay like that for weeks, a big cushion or book in the middle of the room. One time, I went into work on a day off because there was a big spider in the bedroom at home. I would rather go into work than stay in the house. Everyone laughed at me!

My other big fear is needles. I had to have a few injections recently for India and Mauritius and I think I’m just about ok with injections, although Rich had to come with me. Its giving blood I can’t do, they can never find a vain and the tourniquet freaks me out. Just writing this now I’m freaked out and feel wobbly. I can't post a needle picture on this blog either.

I was ill a few years ago and they wanted to take some blood, I couldn’t do it. I had to take several valium before I would let the nurse anywhere near me. To the point where I didn't know who or where I was. Rich was with me at the doctors and I screamed the place down and cried. I had to go to hospital afterwards for more tests and they tried to take more blood but they gave up with me screaming, about three people tried as well. The only way I can do it is if I have lots of valium and the only person who I am relaxed with enough is nurse Elaine at my UK doctors. I don’t think I will ever be able to have children because of my fear of giving blood.

What are you afraid of?

  1. I thought I was doing better about the spider thing but one decided to crawl into the shower with me last week and I am back to not being cool with them.

I totally get the needle thing and seriously will not be having children parly because of it. :) Sometimes I feel like a bad person because I can't bring myself to donate to Red Cross. Yuck!

    1. Oh I'm glad it's it just me with the needle thing. If you could have a baby without them taking blood from you if think I could do it! I could never give blood, I feel bad about that too...

  2. I also have a fear of spiders! I love living in New York now - no spiders! In Johannesburg we had huge, hairy, black ones (the size of your hand) surprising you when you walk into your bedroom...
    A month of Blog...

  3. Most spiders I don't mind, but tarantulas made me shudder.
Also needles are fine with me but the idea of an epidural is terrifying!

    1. I think tarantulas are the least frightening for me, because they are more cuddly maybe? I'm strange...

  4. Thanks for the comment. I used to be afraid of needles, and the thought of giving blood would make me pass out. But then I got pregnant with my twins and now needles, blood and the like no longer bother me.

And spiders. Ick. makes my skin crawl.

  9. We have a bug vacuum to take care of spiders. It gently sucks them up and then you can deposit them outside. The thought of crushing them bothers me more the spiders themselves.

    1. No susie, they must die! I've seen the vacuum thing but it wouldn't work for me, I'd drop it :)

  10. Oh god, add heights into the mix and you have my three phobias too! Although I prefer big spiders to smaller ones - the smaller they are, the quicker they tend to move :( I'm also afraid of needles; when I had to have my first filling last month I was more scared of the needle than the actual filling, but I just adopted my age-old trick of closing my eyes! If I don't see it, I can take it as I know they're often necessary! xx

    1. Hey laura, heights I'm generally ok with, although sometimes I feel a little wobbly. Needles at the dentist are fine with me too, I actually enjoy going to the dentist!

  11. I almost wrote about spiders, because that is my worst current fear. It's a good thing I didn't since you did! Plus, I love how you made the spider cute. :)
