Z = Zoo

I’m not particularly a big fan of Zoo’s or seeing animals caged up. I suppose it depends on the animal and conditions they are kept in how I feel.

We recently went to OC Zoo which is located inside Irvine Park in the city of Orange, about 20 minutes drive from where we live. The Zoo's focus is on animals native to the Southwestern United States. It’s a small zoo and it only costs $2 admission, which is very cheap. You don’t get much for $2 in Southern California!

It’s a lovely zoo and doesn’t take long to wander around. They have a little farm section with goats, chickens, sheep, rabbits etc. The goats are very cute and you can feed and groom them.

We saw Coyotes, Mountain Lions, Bobcats, Racoons, Beavers, Bears and a variety of bird species. The Bobcat looked very sad and kept looking at me...he was my favourite.

We were there at feeding time for the Mountain Lions, they are pretty big when stretched out.

Outside of the zoo, there is a little train which we decided to go on because we thought it would take us all over Irvine Park (it doesn’t). For $5 each, you get a 10 minute ride which didn’t really go very far so I was a little disappointed.

My final artwork for A-Z today is based on the little train ride:

I can't believe the A-Z challenge is over, I feel very sad. I have really enjoyed it and hope to keep up with blogging daily. I've visited some really lovely and interesting blogs and met some great people. I hope you will all continue to blog too and keep following me and commenting. I've appreciated each and everyone of the comments you have left and that is what has kept me going throughout the challenge. A big THANK YOU to you all!

I need to set myself a new challenge now (Any ideas?)

  2. I'm not a zoo lover either but at times I do crave to visit Gorilla's and the only place I know to see them are at the zoo. In SF-Zoo they have a Island full of gorillas and I used to like to just sit and watch them interact with each other.

    It's bittersweet that the challenge has come to an end. It was a JOY getting to know you and reading your blog. I love your art work too. It's pretty easy for me to blog every day - but mostly about boring stuff - at least the challenge made me have to actually THINK of a topic. Yeah it was fun!

    1. Gorillas are cool animals, that's the love/hate thing with zoos, you can only see these kind of animals by going to a zoo. I'm really pleased to you enjoyed my blog and artwork, I really enjoyed yours too and your sense of humour!

  3. Cool post. The goat you showed looks like the goats in Ghana. I love the baby ones. I wanted to have one as a pet, but my cousin said hell no. They eat everything.

  4. There used to be the Safari "something" I forget, but it was a huge wild park, almost like a Disneyland type, where you could drive your car through it. In Irvine. I am wondering if that is the same place but a smaller version. They took the other out because of liability (the animals kept escaping and there was a fire that freaked all of them out)! If you have time, go visit Modjeska Bird Sanctuary in the Santiago Hills. Nice there. Small and quant. Madame Modjeska's house is there too. She was an old actress and was very eccentric. Her house is historic and worth a fun day. Cooks Corners, a place where riders go, is close by too...don't be scared, they are only motorcyclists. Would be fun to say hi, if you do, you know where to find me. Thanks for the visits. I will be checking in to your posts.

  5. I always feel a bit sad going to the zoo. I always find myself thinking that the animals really don't want to be there (like they can reason or think) So I tend to stay away from them.

    I enjoyed meeting you and I adore your art. I hope you'll continue to visit me because I plan on visiting you!

    Congrats on completing the challenge..

  10. Congrats on finishing! I'm not a big fan of zoos either, but I do like the way some of them rescue animals. They do that sort of thing all the time at many of the SoCali zoos, including the San Diego Zoo. Oh, and that train artwork is one of your most adorable yet! I love trains, and that's just too cute. Love the ABCD... :)
