P = Photography

Photography is one of my passions, I love taking photos and I love the memories they capture.

One of my favourite things is looking through old photographs from when I was a kid or photographs of family before I was born. Before we left the UK, I had to sort through everything to clear out the house and I found so many old photographs, some I’d never even seen before, I find them fascinating. Here is an old photograph of my dad with my granddad (before I was born) which I recently found:

My dad used to love taken photographs (mainly of buses....don’t ask!) so I imagine this is where my passion has come from. I had a camera from an early age and used to snap away whenever we went on holiday or on a day trip. The best bit was waiting for the film to be processed in the shop and the suspense at what the photographs would look like.

Things are different now in the digital age. You can delete pictures you don’t like or ones that are blurred before uploading them to a computer. So rather than having photo albums and bags full of photographs, I have a computer full of images. It’s amazing really at how quickly you can take a photograph and upload it to your computer or Facebook but it’s not quite got the same element of excitement as it used to have when you waited for them to be processed, or even processing them yourself in a dark room (which I did at college years ago).

I take photographs of all sorts of things. If I see a nice door, window or staircase I get my camera out and snap it. I love taking pictures of the sky and always try and get the best angle and lighting. Quite often, the best photographs are the ones where I’ve not tried that hard or through luck.
Here are a few I’ve taken that I’m really proud of:

My artwork for today "say cheese!":

What do you like photographing?

  7. Your photos are amazing. You definitely have the eye for it. :)

    I love the idea of photography. I love seeing other people's pictures. I take horrible ones myself. :P One day I may learn, when there's more time. For now, I'll appreciate those who already know how to take them well.

    1. Hey carrie, I think we all have it in us to take a nice pic, the more you take the more chance you get of having a good one, that's how it works for me :)

  8. I have a few cameras and vid cams too. I connect them to my motorcycles and never leave home without a camera, even if I have a phone camera too. Silly, but its like its a part of my body. I can never get bored look at other photographers' photos or tire of taking a photo. I like the pic of the Curiosity Shop!

    1. Thanks KT, I feel lost without a camera too. The old curiosity shop is still standing in Holborn, London. I was only recently given this photo of my dad by my cousin, until 3 months ago I'd never seen it before! It looks like a cool shop.

  9. Awesome post, Rowena. You've got some awesome photos and I must admit, I'm jealous. I like taking photos but don't feel that I'm very good, despite having an AS Level qualification, lol. Did you ever get Tripleprint photos when you were younger? They were the standard 6x4 photo but with two passport size photos as well - you used to have to send your film off to be processed with them. They were awesome. I do miss printing photos but I save up a years worth a print them in one go - it works out cheaper! Plus it gives you a chance to relive memories; I have to admit, I've not got the 2012 photos printed yet though :( xx

    1. Hey laura! Ahh your photos are lovely, I wish I had done a photography course too now, it's never too late I guess? I don't remember getting the passport sized photos with triple print, but I probably went to the shop to do them then sat around town waiting impatiently for them to be ready. I'm rubbish at printing out pics these days, I may take your advice and do a whole lot all at once....xx

  14. Those are beautiful photos! I like taking pictures but I do miss the film part. When they are on my computer, I forget about them and never find time to actually print them out. But it's nice to be able to delete the bad ones so I don't waste money printing out a million photos that have my thumb in the picture =).

  16. When my mom passed away, I inherited all of her photos and slides. Now I have a scanner that converts the slides to digital images so I have a treasure trove of memories. I am not a photographer but sometimes take good pictures. I love your photos and really like the Dicken's shop.

    1. Hi Ann, that's lovely that you have all the photos from your mum, these things often get lost or not passed on (in my case!) which upsets me.

  21. 20 visits a day is not all too bad. I'm not sure that I always make it to that many myself! I wish you well and hope you'll get a boost with today's promotion.
